Interviews with former Law clerks

Badat, Farzana Ms

An incredibly rewarding and immensely valuable period of my life. It strengthened my respect for the democratic process and intensified my pride at being South African. Furthermore, my experiences and interactions during that short, yet important, time provided me with insights that continue to inform both my life and work.

My time at the Court allowed me to gain many legal and research skills. But more importantly it allowed me to gain valuable insights into the difficulties and creativity involved in judicial decision-making. It provided me with the exciting experience of building institutional capacity, both at the library (resources) and skills level. My experience at the Court has allowed me to be part of, and to make history. Most importantly it allowed me to gain an understanding of the role of the Court in breathing life into the values of the Constitution and in the building of the new South African society.

Dehon, Estelle Ms

My year at Court was a very special and exciting time. It is truly unlike any other workplace, especially for young lawyers, and I found it a vibrant, challenging and extremely stimulating environment. I particularly enjoyed the debates and discussions between the clerks about the upcoming cases, and was privileged to be present on some important and quite gripping days or oral argument. The Goldstone chambers was fantastic, not only because of the close relationship between the co-clerks and the judge, but also because Judge Goldstone was willing to entrust us with a fair amount of responsibility, and to take our opinions seriously – I cannot think of a greater compliment. I learned an incredible amount at Court, and I still miss being there!

It was a time marked by huge responsibility, long hours and hard work. But it was also a time of great learning. The year developed my research skills, analytical skills but above all it developed me as a human being. The work was challenging yet satisfying. The interaction with my fellow clerks holds a special place in my memories. Despite our different life experiences and different personalities we fast became good friends, who shared many happy moments over numerous cups of coffee! The seminars provided for much intellectual discussion and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall the experience remains an invaluable one.

Tshivhase, Enos Mr.

It was thrilling working at a court whose decisions influence international jurisprudence. Interacting with leading South African and international legal minds was unbelievable. Listening to counsel argue cases in court was motivating and stimulating. Not to mention conferences with fellow law clerks which were always characterized by tolerance and open mindedness. I must say that my experience at the Constitutional Court influenced me a great deal such that the Constitution lives in me wherever I go.
